In the cradle of democracy, pigeons don't wear gas masks as Nick Cave sings.
At least not everyday.
In fact, when there's not a protest, pigeons rest in Syntagma, in front of the parliament, enjoying the food people give them so as to take a pic with them.
Petros (below) works as a photographer in Syntagma since 1960s.
"It's never been more difficult. Sometimes, I take pictures for free 'cause many parents can't afford three euros for that" he says."Usually, there are ten photographers working here. Eight of them are not Greeks. It's difficult for them as it is for us. Demonstrations changed everything. We can't work anymore. Even pigeons don't fly back here. They are less than ever".
Pigeons are definitely a part of the square and exist there since it was first built in 19th century.
But, Syntagma in not anymore the place for the symbol of peace to be. During the last years, the number of pigeons has obviously gotten smaller since violent riots and the police use of gas against demonstrators sent them away.
