Economic crisis kills fairy-tales #1

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Koula who wanted to be a queen. In Greece though there are not kings and queens but only people who live like them. So Koula had to compromise. If she wasn't going to be a queen, she was definitely going to live like one. All she had to do was to leave the little village she grew up in, go to Athens and find someone who could afford the living she was dreaming of. And that's exactly what she did!

Soon she met a very rich and powerful man to whom she got married seven years later. At that time Akis Tsochatzopoulos was the Minister of National Defense.

Their wedding took place in Paris in the summer of 2004 and cost more than six million euros. All of the 18 guests were hosted in "George V" hotel where the new weds threw their wedding party as well.

Her life changed rapidly. The new her was named Vicky and was enjoying living the fairy-tale she had woken up in. All by sudden she was asked for interviews and was photographed for magazines. Her beauty and elegance were praised. She was invited to glamorous events and parties. She could spend big money on shopping and traveling. She looked so happy! All of her dreams had come true!

The happily married couple's lifestyle soon got the attention of journalists. How could the Minister of Defense possibly afford all that? Rumors went on and on for ages.

Justice interfered only after a long time. That happened under the hard pressure of public opinion that demanded the punishment of politicians who lead Greece to economic crisis. Vicky and her once powerful husband were arrested and driven to jail under the accusation of money laundering.

And they both live unhappily ever after waiting for their trial. Vicky asked judges to go home citing her status as mother but was not allowed. She then started a hunger strike that drove her to the hospital with bleeding but still did not move nor the judges nor anyone else. She returned to the cell she shares with two more women and is still waiting for her trial.
